In 1997, Capricho was contracted to regild the dome and decorative elements for The Church of All Russian Saints in Burlingame, California. The fiberglass structure was originally constructed in the early 1960s by church parishioners that worked in the aerospace industry. After the domes structural issues were addressed, the entire surface was gilded in 24 karat gold. Completed over twenty years ago, this impressive dome still shines today.
Built in 2000, this landmark structure is the largest ballroom on the West Coast, with over 25,000 square feet of event space. The Art Deco-inspired ballroom is home to the after party of the Oscars award. Capricho worked to gild the over 5,000 square feet of panels with custom made pewter leaf. The project also included the gilding of four large Art Deco window portals in pewter leaf.
Completed in 1932, the Anza branch library was in great need of repair by 2011. The 40,000 square foot ceiling originally stenciled by August Krois was in a particularly poor state due to earthquake cracks and age. Capricho was contracted to restore the building’s historic stenciling after the cracks in the ceiling were consolidated. The project took 3 months and required meticulous paint mixing to match the original colors and a wide array of hand cut stencils. Capricho also restored the gilded entryway. Its cast plaster ceiling with gilding and decorative paint remains a treasure of early 20th century design.
Built in 1896 by Willis Polk, the Bourn mansion is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture. In 2012 Capricho was contacted to restore its decorative elements, which had suffered due to years of neglect and water damage. The work consisted of four floors of vaulted gilt hallway ceilings, extensive conservation of the exquisite sitting room ceiling, restoration of the mural room ceiling and the faux bois ballroom. In 2015, Capricho received an award from the California Preservation Foundation for the project.
